Working without Windows

Several people have asked “What is this Ubuntu thing you keep mentioning?”

The simple answer is that it is an operating system (OS) like Microsoft Windows. However, it is not like Windows in so many ways.

Difference no. 1. The cost. To buy a new Windows 8 license (either for the download or a DVD) will set you back a few pounds. To download and install the latest version of Ubuntu will cost you nothing.

Difference no. 2. Software. Windows has a well established base of applications that are commonplace in both the home and office environemnts. Well, Ubuntu does too. Not all of the applications in Windows are available on Ubuntu (and vice versa), but there are alternatives.

I thought it was about time I put Ubuntu to the test. I am challenging myself to see how much I can do without my trusty old Windows computers. There will be differences and obstacles to overcome and I will relay all the interesting bits via this blog.

So, for the next few weeks this will be my home.
